PhD Colloquium & Paper Producing Workshop (Day 1)
The International Conference on Economics, Business, and Technology Management (ICEBTM 2025), organized by the School of Business and Entrepreneurship (SBE) at the Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB), hosted a PhD Colloquium and Paper Producing Workshop for conference participants. The session was held on November 14, 2025, at The Westin, Dhaka.
The workshop was facilitated by distinguished academics, including Prof. Dr. Rajah Rasiah, University of Malaya, Malaysia; Prof. Dr. Jonathan Liu, International Business School, Manchester, UK; and Prof. Dr. Maniam Kaliannan, University of Nottingham, Malaysia. The session was chaired by Prof. Dr. Md. Mamun Habib, SBE, IUB.
The primary aim of the workshop was to provide participants with guidance on developing high-quality research papers and to familiarize them with the structure, standards, and expectations of PhD-level research. The event emphasized critical aspects of doctoral research, including problem statements, research questions, objectives, hypotheses, and the importance of a strong literature review. Participants were encouraged to take ownership of their research journey and focus on originality, ethical practices, and impactful contributions.
Prof. Dr. Jonathan Liu highlighted the importance of carefully selecting research topics that remain relevant over time and encouraged participants to explore literature extensively before formulating research questions. He stressed that productivity increases through active engagement and collaboration during data collection and research activities.
Prof. Dr. Rajah Rasiah discussed the criteria for selecting PhD research topics, focusing on societal and scientific impact. He emphasized identifying research gaps and contributing new knowledge. He also shared insights from his personal experience, encouraging participants to pursue research with discipline, passion, and persistence.
Prof. Dr. Maniam Kaliannan advised participants on the flexible nature of PhD research and the necessity of adapting to evolving research contexts. He underscored the importance of ethical research practices, systematic literature reviews, and producing publications during the doctoral journey. Participants were guided to critically assess existing studies while creating original research outputs.
Prof. Dr. Md. Mamun Habib concluded the session by emphasizing a structured approach to literature review and the need to align problem statements, objectives, and conceptual frameworks. He provided practical advice for exploring academic databases, evaluating papers, and prioritizing high-quality sources. Participants were reminded that publishing at least one paper during the PhD program is essential, and that a doctoral degree marks the beginning of a lifelong research journey.
The workshop comprised an engaging discussion on research methodology, ethical considerations, theoretical foundations, and strategies for producing publishable academic work. Participants were encouraged to actively engage, ask questions, and build competencies for both academic and industry-relevant research. The session concluded with a token of appreciation presented to the facilitators, marking a successful and enriching end to the PhD-oriented component of ICEBTM 2025.
